Hubs and Virtual Sessions - Which Option is Best for My Virtual Event? Follow
An event Hub and Virtual Sessions both help you organize your events.
- Hubs help you organize events within a program or campaign.
- Virtual Sessions help you organize breakout sessions within a single event.
As you can see, the use cases for each are pretty different, but they occasionally overlap when it comes to certain types of virtual events.
Before we dive in, let's start with some definitions.

What is a Hub?
A Hub is a landing page in Splash that organizes and displays multiple events.
It can be used to showcase all the events in a program or just the events associated with a particular campaign or initiative.
Key distinction: A Hub links out to multiple event pages, each with its own registration experience, confirmation emails, calendar invites, and guest list.
Most commonly used for: Program calendar and campaign landing page (e.g. Road Show)
What are Virtual Sessions?
Virtual Sessions are a way to create a multi-session experience within a single virtual event.
Guests register to one event and receive a single confirmation and calendar invite. And on the day of the event, they use a single virtual access link to access a dynamic agenda page, allowing them to jump between different content sections.
Key distinction: Virtual Sessions are associated with a single event. Guests register for the event — but they do not register for individual sessions.
Most commonly used for: Virtual events with multiple breakout sessions.
Choosing Between a Hub and Virtual Sessions
When to use a Hub
If any of the following are requirements for your event, you’ll want to consider using a Hub.
- You want to collect registration information for each session.
- You want to set registration capacities for each session.
- You want your guests to receive a calendar invite for each session.
- You want to send session registrants distinct reminder emails.
As a host, you’ll be creating individual event pages for each session.
For hosts, that means:
- Each session will have its own registration form and guest list
- Each session will have its own confirmation email and calendar invite
- Each session will be hosted on its own Virtual Event URL
- Each session will be reported on as if its a separate event
Guests will register for and attend each session individually.
For guests, that means:
- They’ll need to navigate to individual event pages
- They’ll receive individual confirmation emails and calendar invites
- They’ll need to use a different Virtual Event URL for each session they’d like to attend
When to use Virtual Sessions
If session registration and session capacities are not hard requirements for your event, consider using Virtual Sessions. Guests can choose their own sessions on the day of the event from the Virtual Event Page.
For hosts, that means:
- They will set up one confirmation email and calendar invite for the event as a whole
- All sessions will be hosted on the same Virtual Event URL
- Guests will register for the event, not for individual sessions
- A full report of session attendance, including checked in and checked out times, will be available in the event’s Analytics tab
For guests, that means:
- They’ll receive one confirmation email and calendar invite for the event
- They can view all sessions on the agenda page, but cannot register for individual sessions
- They’ll join the event on the Virtual Event URL and choose their own journey from a list of available sessions
Note: If you’re interested in collecting interest in sessions, consider adding a registration question to your event’s form that asks guests which sessions they want to register for. You can also use response option capacities to prevent sessions from overfilling. |
