How do I get an SSL certificate installed for my vanity domain?

Every event page comes with a unique Splash page URL. Splash page URLs are all secure - meaning they start with https:// - and ensure an encrypted connection between server and browser, protecting your attendees and their data.

However, it's a very common practice to use a Vanity URL to connect your page to a custom, white labeled domain that you own. In other words, instead of your Splash page living on a URL such as myevent.splashthat.com, it would instead reside on a URL like myevent.com or myevent.mycompany.com.

While it's easy to connect your page to a custom domain, that https:// doesn't transfer over automatically.

Many companies have more rigorous security requirements, which requires the installation of an SSL certificate, enabling the URLs to open with https:// prepended.

For our Enterprise accounts, Splash now offers two options to install certificates!

1. Let’s Encrypt

Let’s Encrypt is our default method. Let's Encrypt-generated certificates expire every three months but are automatically renewed. This process is hands off for your team - all you have to do is point your domain to our Vanity IP address prior to installation, and we’ll take care of the rest for you!
To kick off the process, please let us know the following:
  • Organization Name (Company)
  • Should www. be covered in the certificate for the domain?
  • Confirm that your DNS settings have an A Record that’s pointed to our vanity IP: 54.84.134.174 prior to us installing the SSL (check out How do I set up a Vanity URL to go to my Splash page? for more details)

2. Standard CSR

This is a great option if your company requires that your data (company name, location, etc.) is in the certificate. If you need to own the certificate on your end, the standard option is best.
Standard certificates expire and must be renewed after one or more years.
We will generate a CSR for your team to install on your servers. We cannot move forward with SSL installation until this step is complete.
Here's how the standard process works:
  1. Splash generates a CSR (certificate signing request) that has your company's information in it:
    • Country Name
    • State or Province Name
    • Locality Name (City)
    • Organization Name (Company)
    • Organizational Unit Name (Section) - This is optional
    • Email - This is optional
  2. Splash sends the CSR back to you.

  3. Next, take the CSR, generate/purchase a certificate for it, and send it back to Splash.

  4. Splash installs the certificate on its server.

  5. Finally, add a record to your domain's DNS Settings that points it to our Vanity IP: 54.84.134.174. Check out more information on our Vanity Server here.

Note: If you previously had a subdomain with a CNAME record pointing to domains.splashthat.com, that setup would be correct UNLESS there is an SSL installed on the domain. For SSL Installs, the DNS settings must point to the Vanity IP.

If your team would like to move forward with the Standard option, please send over the information listed in Step 1.

Already purchased an SSL-cert (outside of Splash) for a root domain, and looking to set up SSL for the subdomain? If so, a new certificate is needed, so reach out to our team following the same SSL request process.

We're here if you have any further questions on SSL info and pricing!
